Sat, July 14 / 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
July 14th & 15th, 10am – 4pm (with a break for lunch) both days
Join ceramic artist Wesley Wright and learn to sculpt animal heads and portrait busts in clay!
Participants can create any animal, exotic, common, or your own pet. This weekend intensive will give students the opportunity to create detailed, expressive and refined work. Wesley will demonstrate hollow building techniques, how to use references imagery, and other processes.
Day 1 will focus on establishing the overall form.
Day 2 will deal with subtleties and details such as rendering eyes, flesh, musculature, and of course fur! The final product will be a bust or head sculpture that can be mounted on a wall.
Ages 18 and up. Intermediate to advanced ceramics, but beginners are also welcome.
Instructor: Wesley Wright
Students, please bring your:
- Basic ceramic tools
- Pottery tool set
- Fork or scoring tool
- Fettling knife
- Philippe Faraut 7″ Clay Modeling Eye Tool (recommended)
- Kemper B3 Clean up tool (recommended)

- Reference images
- Print out high resolution reference images of your chosen animal from different angles. I recommend using a Google image search. Search the name of your animal and specify what you want to see. Example: “giraffe head profile”. The more images the better. Small anatomical figurines can also be helpful. You can find them at Michaels or online. It can also be helpful to have skull and muscle structure images.
