SUMMARY:SCG Artist Demonstration Day with Jennifer Rugge
DESCRIPTION:Join ceramic artist Jennifer Rugge for an engaging live demonstration exploring the creative process behind her ceramic practice. Jennifer will share her approach to working with clay\, demonstrating techniques and offering insight into how an idea develops from concept to finished ceramic work. \n\nWednesday\, September 9th\, 2026\n12PM-2PM\nAll ages welcome\nFree to attend! Registration encouraged. \n\nJennifer Rugge is a Wildlife Lyrical earth artist\, creating work from organic materials including hand-ground mineral pigments and clay slips. Her process begins with collecting ochres and minerals\, which are refined into paints using traditional\, earth friendly methods that are high in light-fastness and archival quality. \nInfluenced by ancient practices—from ancient and global cave paintings to European masters—Jennifer’s Art incorporates pictographic symbols drawn from early and extinct languages. These signs speak to a universal element to communicate\, inspire and connect. Through these processes\, Jennifer seeks a deeper relationship between the art and the land. Each piece reflects a dialogue with the earth\, its wildlife and nature—honoring both its history and its presence—while embracing environmentally conscious methods in her studio. \n\nThe Susan Cooley-Gilliom Artist in Residence and Teaching Program is generously offered in partnership with the Placer County Foundation.

SUMMARY:SCG Workshop | Sgraffito Techniques with Jennifer Rugge
DESCRIPTION:Connect with the earth through clay in this two-day\, hands-on workshop inspired by the ancient art of Paleolithic cave painters from Europe\, Australia\, and South Africa. Sgraffito\, meaning “to scratch\,” is a decorative technique in which artists scratch through a layer of slip to reveal the clay beneath\, creating expressive lines\, patterns\, and imagery. \nParticipants will explore natural earth minerals and clay slips while learning how ancient techniques can be adapted into a contemporary clay practice. Students will prepare their own clay slips and use them to decorate slab-built mugs and tiles\, creating patterns and drawings on leather-hard surfaces. Sgraffito techniques and burnishing will then be used to enhance the finished pieces. \nDesigned for all skill levels and abilities\, this workshop offers an opportunity to explore the connection between art\, clay\, and the Earth while creating unique\, earth-inspired works of art. \n*Given the length of each workshop day\, there will be a lunch break. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch and water (there is a refrigerator on site) or visit one of the many restaurants on Vernon Street within walking distance. \nAll skill levels welcome.\nKiln firing services will be included.\nParticipants will be contacted when fired pieces are ready for pickup.\nAll materials included. \n\n2-Day Workshop\nThursday\, September 10th\, 11AM-4:30PM &\nFriday\, September 11th\, 11AM-4:30PM\nAges: 18+\nMembers Price: $220\nNon-Member Price: $264 \n\nThe Susan Cooley-Gilliom Artist in Residence and Teaching Program is generously offered in partnership with the Placer County Foundation.

SUMMARY:SCG Artist Demonstration Day with Ray Gonzales
DESCRIPTION:Join ceramic artist Ray Gonzales for an in-depth demonstration exploring the possibilities of clay as both a material and a storytelling medium. \n\nWednesday\, September 23rd\, 2026\n11AM-1PM\nAll ages welcome\nFree to attend! Registration encouraged. \n\nI work in clay. It has always\, always been clay for me. The tactile\, visual and narrative qualities are what drew me in and have kept me focused since my beginnings on this humble and incredible material. The endless possibilities keep me riveted. The contemporary\, the historic\, the ancient and the cultural works in clay provide endless inspiration for me. I see myself in it. \nMy sculptures are narratives. Stories of my experiences as well as reflections of world events- both past and present\, historical and personal. My ancestry and cultural traditions are paramount to me and oftentimes included in the works. \nMy wheelworks include both traditional and contemporary directions. Color\, form\, surface and scale are included in my process when creating these works. I am constantly exploring variations with clays\, glazes\, raw surfaces and multiple firing techniques using electric and gas fired kilns as well as Raku and primitive firings. Life is good. \n\nThe Susan Cooley-Gilliom Artist in Residence and Teaching Program is generously offered in partnership with the Placer County Foundation.
