Statement from Sean Guerra:
Art represents an avenue for self-reflection and interrogation which I hope challenges Eurocentric conceptions of knowledge, power and culture. It serves as a personal, healing process for recovering a spiritual connection to antepasados (ancestors) through a culturally relevant praxis inspired by Rasquachismo (“underdog perspective” described by Chicano scholar Tomás Ybarra-Frausto.)
In my work, I wish to develop a visual language for presenting political commentary through my art persona — “WAR,” a nickname given to me by my first art teacher Jorge Guillen, which has since become my own symbol of international solidarity in the spirit of the Organization of Solidarity with the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL) while also reconnecting with Mesoamerican imagery and mythology.
