ICU Goodbye – Steve O’Loughlin
Acrylic on Canvas
Thread is a collaboration of artists Steve O’Loughlin, Daniel Richmond and Scott Gibson. Early in 2020 Steve and Daniel began to combine their diverse styles. Contrasting Steve’s tightly rendered images with Daniel’s spontaneous graffiti abstractions. The combination worked and through the pandemic they have created dozens of paintings and mural. In the spring of 2022 graffiti artist Scott Gibson added his powerful style. So like our name says, THREAD stitches together our diverse styles to creating dynamic and surprising new work.
ICU Goodbye was painted in the summer of 2020 when the pandemic was raging and fear was near its peak. It was inspired by the stories of nurses having to face-time families as their loved ones passed in isolation. I combined this with my own experience of my own father’s death in the ICU [Intensive Care Unit] in 2017. He was surrounded by our whole family, and though hard it was a beautiful, sad goodbye. Covid denied families this difficult but cathartic experience. I wanted to acknowledge the suffering of the patient, the loved ones and honor the medical workers who performed this difficult task.
