Monument 1 – Benito Rangel de Maria
mixed media on paper mounted on six clay bricks
Statement from Benito Rangel de Maria:
The Brick Project is an act of resistance to the recent completion of additional wall along the US-Mexico border. It is comprised of 452 bricks that have been transformed into sculptural works of art that eliminate the bricks’ original function, as a building element used to construct walls.
These bricks, one for every mile of new wall, are meant to stand alone. They are independent and autonomous, incapable of becoming symbols of division.
For this exhibition, I have created Monument 1. It includes six bricks that represent the deconstruction of our Southern border wall. More importantly, it pays tribute to those immigrants who have braved the journey from their homeland to the border.
