Smokin’ That Bass – Mike Hazlip
Just as a musical instrument can produce different sound frequencies, the camera can capture different light frequencies. Color, form, value, and shape are to light what note, tone, pitch, and rhythm are to music. Terms like rhythm and interval have similar meanings to musicians as they do to visual artists. My camera is my instrument, and I use it to communicate the feeling and intensity of a live performance. Sometimes color is a vital part of that story and other times a black and white photograph is the best way to render the lights and forms of a performance. My first concerts were all shot on black & white film and even now with digital color, I still like the look and feel of a concert in black & white.
