Create paper from found organic material
SCG | Adult Programs
September 13 / 10:00 am - September 14 / 4:00 pm
In this workshop we will make paper from local plant waste materials, starting with gathered plant materials and ending with handmade paper artworks created from local plant sources (leaves and bark gathered without harming the plant). We will learn how to collect, what to collect, and how to prepare leaves, bark and stems of certain plants to make great handmade paper for 2 and 3-dimensional artworks. We will collect, cook, beat and make paper from at least two different plants we gather near the site and use others Jane has prepared that are found in Northern California. Learn about plants and useful fibers and create beautiful site-specific handmade paper artworks in a variety of natural colors and textures. All papermaking will be done with eco-friendly and sustainable techniques and an emphasis on using natural and non-toxic materials.
Beginners and experienced papermakers are welcome and all will learn new techniques because of Jane’s experience and research in different countries and with different fibers. Jane will bring sample books and examples of handmade paper from the many different countries where she has been an artist in residence.
All materials included. Bringing snacks and water are advised. There will be time to break for lunch.

In 2010, the Cooley-Gilliom Artist in Residence and Teaching (ART) The program was established at Placer Community Foundation through an endowed gift made in memory of Susan by her family and the Sky View Foundation. The ART program represents a lasting legacy to the beloved local artist and environmental advocate. Short-term residencies and workshops taught Susan by established and highly reputable artists are offered to develop and enhance the visual arts in Placer County.
