Liminal Light, Los Angeles presents a series of black-and-white photographs that explore the subtle thresholds where light, shadow, and perception intersect in the urban landscape. Robert Gideon, an award-winning photographer and Los Angeles resident, brings a quiet attentiveness to the city, focusing on moments that are easily overlooked yet emotionally resonant. Originally trained as an engineer and largely self-taught as a photographer, Gideon learned the craft shooting and developing black-and-white film on his father’s Exakta Varex IIa — an early influence that continues to shape his deliberate approach to composition and tone. Through nightly walks and sustained observation, his work reveals the city not as spectacle, but as a sequence of transitional spaces: reflective surfaces, architectural fragments, empty streets, and faint nocturnal glow. These photographs occupy the space between light and dark, presence and absence, clarity and ambiguity. By lingering in these liminal moments, the work invites viewers to pause and reconsider how Los Angeles is seen, felt, and remembered — as an experience shaped by light.
