An adult painting class for beginners and beyond.
Adult Programs

Have you been wanting to learn how to paint in oil or acrylic? Or perhaps you have been painting but are stuck in a certain area and looking for guidance? Students of all skill levels are welcome to join us for a 3 week class led by artist, Barbara Davies, to learn or refresh on foundational painting techniques to take your work to the next level! Each weekly session will feature an art demonstration and focus on a different area of development:
Week 1: Barbara will demonstrate painting methods, materials, and discuss and demonstrate painting with acrylic vs. oil paint, brush types, mediums, painting surfaces, color mixing, and paint application. Students will prepare a canvas using acrylics, mix colors and create a simple landscape painting while following along with instructor. At the end of this session, students choose an image for their own paintings for next class.
Week 2: Using their photo reference, students draw their subject on a prepared canvas using a grid, and/or tracing and transfer paper. He/she will choose brushes, paints and mediums, mix colors from a limited palette, and create tints, tones and shades as needed. Students will apply and blend paint to create various effects. At the end of this session, paintings should be “layer out” and the first paint layer completed.
Week 3: Students will use various techniques to create depth in their paintings, and will create a range of color values from dark to light. Simple rules of perspective and proportion will be demonstrated and practiced in creating their paintings. Color theory will be discussed (warm vs cool) as well as color recession and advancement. Paintings will be completed or brought to a level where they can be completed at home.
Materials Included; Students are welcome to bring in their own painting supplies and materials that they prefer to work with.
